Five arrested for theft and possession of contraband at Losperfontein Correctional Centre

Five members of the public including an 18 year old woman were apprehended at Losperfontein Correctional Centre on Tuesday night, 7 February 2017 following an intensive security plan set up by the DCS Emergency Support Team (EST).

The security operation was set up by Security Manager Matshidiso Moatshe following reported cases of chicken and eggs theft at the chicken project of the correctional centre. Losperfontein correctional centre is mainly a farming area which enables the correctional centre to be self-sustainable.

The apprehended suspects were found at the fence of the correctional facility possessing 31 balls of dagga to the street value of R36 000.00, 100 packets of nyaope, 3 cell phones, and a knife.

All suspects were handed over to SAPS and cases of theft and possession of illegal items were of opened at Brits Police station.

The suspects were denied bail during their court appearance yesterday, Wednesday 8 February 2017 at Brits magistrate court and the case has been postponed to a later date.

The acting Regional Commissioner for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Region Phiko Mbambo said majority of our Correctional Officials at Losperfontein Correctional Centre must be commended for this remarkable achievement, especially the EST members.

Mr Mbambo said he is concerned by members of the public who aid inmates to commit further criminal offences inside the correctional facilities. “We would like to, once again, warn members of the public that, in terms of the Correctional Services Act, no person may, without lawful authority, supply, convey or cause to be supplied or conveyed to any inmate, or hide or place for his or her use any document, intoxicating liquor, dagga, drug, opiate, money, or any other article.

Such person if found, is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine, or to incarceration.
