Limpopo Government hosts Take Back the Night Campaign in Lephalale, 10 Dec

Annually, the 25th November to 10th December is observed as 16 days of activism against women and children abuse. The Office of the Status of Women in the Limpopo Provincial Government will host “Take Back the Night campaign” as the closing ceremony for the 16 days activities (which includes Aids Day and International Day for Persons with disabilities).

Lephalale is earmarked to host the event due to absconding of school particularly by girls during child support grant pay day, teenage pregnancy, abuse of alcohol, killing and raping of women.

This is an event held across the globe during the 16 days of activism on no violence against women and children. The world realized that women are unable to enjoy their basic right to walk down the street at night without experiencing some form of violence.

Besides the closing ceremony, the fight against abuse of women and children still continues. The Provincial Government calls on all people to stop, act, protect women and children at all times. Take Back the Night march will be held at Lephalale, Marapong, Waterberg District under the theme ”count me in: together moving a non violent South Africa forward”.

Early marches were often deliberately women-only in order to symbolize women's individual walk through darkness and to demonstrate that women united can resist fear and violence. Most marches in the present day include men.

Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha together with his Members of Executive Council (MECs) are inviting all residents of Lephalale to attend the event. The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) brass band will bless the event and entertain the audience. This event consists of a rally and a  candlelight vigil .
