Limpopo commemorates Freedom Day at Bakenberg Stadium, 27 Apr

Limpopo Province will join the rest of the country in commemorating Freedom Day under the theme “Celebrating 25 years of Freedom” which will also mark the 6th national general elections under a democratic dispensation. The 2019 National Freedom Day marks 25 years of freedom from apartheid colonial oppression and 2nd decade of constitutional democracy.

It is a milestone departure from colonial and apartheid oppression, spanning over 400 years. It is an opportunity not only to celebrate 22 years of the Constitution, freedom and democracy, but also to reflect on how South Africa`s democracy and freedom was achieved.

The nation will be afforded an opportunity to retrospect on progress made in the past 25 years and how South Africans should work together to achieve economic freedom.

On international stage the 2019 South African Commemorative calendar coincides with the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s Proclamation that the 2019 is the International Year on Indigenous Languages.

This year, the celebrations, in Limpopo for Freedom Day celebration is scheduled to be held as follows:

The Freedom Month (April) commemorates the historic occasion in 1994 when South Africa achieved freedom and democracy, where all its citizens became free from the discrimination and oppression, moving away from hatred, divisions and a painful history to build a common future together.

It further, recognises and celebrates the strides that the country and the Limpopo Province has made since 1994. The majority of communities have increased access to a wide range of basic services.

More opportunities have been created for the vast majority to participate in the economy. Although significant progress has been made challenges still remain.

The celebrations also present an opportunity to reflect on the 22 years of the Constitution, to re-examine the challenges and consolidate the gains made thus far in transforming the South African society especially the disadvantaged.
