Public Protector Thuli Madonsela addresses Kendra Business Forum Fund Raising Dinner

Let’s base decision-making on constitutional values: Public Protector

Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela has called for decision-making processes, in state affairs, that are anchored on constitutional values.

Such values included human dignity, equality, human rights and freedoms, non-racialism, non-sexism and the supremacy of the constitution and rule of law.

She was addressing the Kendra Business Forum Fund Raising Dinner at the Durban International Convention Centre last night.

Public Protector Madonsela said South Africa had a progressive constitution that promised citizens and residents a freed potential and an improved quality of life.

The country also boasted good institutions that did a good job and had the capacity to help deliver the constitutional promises, she said.

In addition to these, the country generally had a good leadership in government, business and civil society.

Public Protector Madonsela said while the country had achieved a lot since 1994, more could have been achieved.

She said most governance and leadership challenges were a result of lack of relevant experience.

The Public Protector explained that while it had been easy to envision the type of state that would succeed the apartheid administration, it had since proved difficult to walk the actual journey towards that ideal state.

“Let us return to the constitutional values-driven decision-making,” she said.
