Water and Sanitation holds South African Youth Water Prize Provincial competition, 19 Apr

Learners to showcase water & sanitation solutions

High school learners from schools around the Mpumalanga Province will get an opportunity to showcase their innovations and solutions to water challenges in the province during the South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP) Provincial Competition to be held on 19 April 2016 at the Nelsville Community Hall in Mbombela.

The South African Youth Water Prize is the Department of Water and Sanitation’s project to enhance the interest of learners in water and sanitation related careers and address the skills shortage challenge in the country. The SAYWP competition encourages learners to identify water and sanitation related problems in their schools or communities, conduct research, recommend and implement solutions.

This requires the learners to be innovative to come up with workable solutions.

The SAYWP is part of the department’s broader 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme (VFWSEP) which is a schools-based education programme which promotes water use efficiency, water quality management, awareness creation about alien invasive plants and their impact on water resources, and health and hygiene.

The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Education.

Provincial winners will represent the province in the National Competition and compete against winners from the other provinces for the ultimate prize of a fully paid trip with the Minister to represent the country at the Stockholm Youth Water Prize. Other prizes include bursaries to pursue water and sanitation related careers.

South Africa is a water scarce country which requires all to come together and protect our water resources and use them efficiently, effectively and wisely for a sustainable future.
