Parliament condemns violence in Vumani, Limpopo

Select Committee on Education Condemns Abuse of Learners’ Rights to Education in Limpopo

The Select Committee on Education and Recreation in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is not happy about what is happening in Vuwani in the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, as young people there are being denied their right to access basic education.

Committee Chairperson Ms Lungelwa Zwane said the protesters have the right to protest, but they must respect the learner's constitutional right to access quality education.

“Destruction of community assets like schools is condemned with the contempt it deserves as the Department of Basic Education has already invested substantial capital to build and upgrade these schools. Such actions are certainly not part of taking South Africa forward but are a direct reversal of our democratic gains and are counter-revolutionary. We hope the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will speedily resolve the impasse so that the situation can return back to normality," said Ms Zwane.
