Transport Minister to lead road safety and law enforcement operations in North West
The Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, together with the North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Dr Mokgantshang Motlhabane will lead the 2017 Road Safety and law enforcement for Easter Operations in the North West.
The Minister and MEC will be joined by Faith Based Organisations who will conduct a prayers in four different areas identified as accidents hot-spot areas.
One of the areas is where the Province recently lost the lives of eight people when the minibus taxi they were traveling with collided with a cement truck on the N4 road.
The activation of the Road Safety and Law Enforcement Operations is an annual campaign aimed at intensifying and increasing traffic officers’ visibility with inclusive of road safety and crime prevention campaigns.
The operations are meant to reduce road accidents and fatalities across all major roads across the province.
During these operations, the department joins forces with all relevant stakeholders in transport sector, the South African Police Service (SAPS), National Traffic Police (NTP), business, SAPS and criminal justice cluster to ensure that the citizens of the province enjoy road accident and crime free during the Easter period.
This is in support of the Decade of Action for Road Safety aimed at reducing road accidents by 50% in 2020.
