MEC Martha Bartlett launches Safety and Security Month, 4 Feb

Launch of Safety and Security month and the “Create a Safer Environment for Children Campaign”.

The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Martha Bartlett will launch Safety and Security Month, which aims to mobilise communities to assist with the fight against crime, in conjunction with the “Create a Safer Environment for Children Campaign”.

Both projects will be launched on Thursday, 4 February 2016 in ZF Mgcawu District.

The “Create a Safer Environment for Children Campaign” has been initiated by the MEC to ensure that old appliances and items which may affect the safety of children, should be removed from our communities.

The programme follows the tragic incident where 5 children lost their lives while enclosed in an old fridge in Kakamas and the occurrence of other similar incidents in the Province.  The MEC and Premier Sylvia Lucas then committed to launch an initiative to create safer environments for our children and communities.

The department is then initiating the “Create a Safer Environment for Children Campaign” which will trust communities across the Province and the rest of the country will heed.

Following the launch of Safety and Security Month and the campaign, MEC Bartlett, will also distribute 100 Shova Kalula bicycles in Upington to the ZF Mgcawu District Mayor for distribution across the district.

Through the bicycle distribution campaign we believe that we will be able to improve the quality of basic education by enhancing the access to education, especially in our rural areas.
