Latest spate of violence at universities a grave concern – Committee
The latest spate of violence at universities is of grave concern to the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Yvonne Phosa, said it appeared as though some political formations were manipulating the violence for political gains. “The academic year is supposed to be in full swing, yet universities are bogged down by governance and operational issues. It’s almost at the end of the first term but the environment is not conducive for learning in many of our universities, and that is of concern,” Ms Phosa said.
She added: “We wish to reiterate the Committee’s condemnation of the acts of vandalism and damage to property at universities. This compromises safety of students as well as important records.”
Although circumstances are not clear, a computer lab and a study centre were burnt yesterday at the North West University (Mahikeng campus). Last week, the University of Cape Town Vice Chancellor Max Price’s office was petrol-bombed during ongoing battle over lack of accommodation.
Ms Phosa called on churches to pray for stability and safety at all learning institutions, but as well as for parents to engage learners about their futures. She said management at universities should ensure that they protect university assets.
“It is unfortunate that this is happening when government has undertaken to increase access to tertiary education for poor and students who cannot afford. The future is not about throwing petrol bombs or burning down university property, but using universities constructively in empowering students and subsequently the nation,” she said.
