Labour hosts SADC Joint Tripartite Technical Meeting, 16 to 18 Oct

Labour Director-General, Lamati to host SADC Joint Tripartite Technical Meeting

The Department of Labour Director-General, Thobile Lamati, will host the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) Employment and Labour Sector’s (ELS) Joint Tripartite Technical Meeting (JTTM) at  the Southern Sun Hemingways hotel in East London from the 16 to 18 October 2017.

The JTTM’s main purpose is to prepare for the SADC ELS meeting to be hosted by the Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant in 2018. The Minister will be hosting Ministers responsible for Employment and Labour as well as Social Partners from the SADC region as the Chairperson following South Africa’s taking over of the Constituency’s Chairmanship from August 2017 to August 2018.

With trends of slow growth and heightened concerns that the slow growth will weaken outlook for jobs and facing the common challenge of reducing unemployment, poverty and inequality, the JTTM in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) office in Pretoria, will deliberate on the issues such as digitalization, global supply chain, small medium and micro enterprises, as well as apprenticeships and youth employment.

The meeting will conclude with the drafting of the Ministerial Declaration for the SADC ELS meeting and will be signed by the President at the end of South Africa’s Chairmanship.

The JTTM will convene again in February 2018 to finalise preparations for the Ministerial meeting that will follow in March 2018.
