The Department of Labour in collaboration with the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ITC-ILO) will hold a five day Labour Migration Academy (LMA) at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg, from the 5th to the 9th December 2016.
Held under the theme “Enhancing Protection, Promoting Sustainable Development and Facilitating Fair and Effective Labour Migration”, the Academy aims to provide advanced knowledge and enhance capacity of key migration actors to better understand labour migration challenges and opportunities in a changing political, economic and social context.
The LMA which was inaugurated in 2011 is the ILO flagship training activity in the field of migration and the most important global training event offered by the ITC-ILO on migration.
Department of Labour’s International Relation Chief Director: Sipho Ndebele said the LMA covers a wide range of labour migration topics such as men and women migrant worker protection, labour migration governance, and development.
He said the Academy is aimed at all the players involved in labour migration. This includes planners and officials from various government institutions and agencies; representatives of workers and employers; Nongovernmental organisations (NGO) and civil society as well as activists; representatives of diasporas and migrants’ Associations; international development agencies and regional economic committees; researchers and academics; as well as journalists and media workers.
He said the LMA’s content is derived from the ILO Agenda of Fair Migration and other key outcomes such as, the conclusion of the Tripartite technical Meeting on Labour Migration that took place in November 2013, the ILO Multilateral Framework on Labour Migration 2006, and the 2004 International Labour Conference plan of action for migrant workers and the conclusions of the Tripartite Technical Meeting on Access of Refugees and other Forcibly Displaced Persons to the Labour Market of July 2016 as well as the Tripartite Meeting of Experts on Fair Recruitment of September 2016.
The Academy will be attended by local and international delegates.
