Labour embarks on employment equity roadshows in Eastern Cape, 6 and 7 Sept

Department of Labour discusses employment equity (EE) with stakeholders in East London and Port Elizabeth

The Department of Labour’s Employment Equity (EE) Directorate will next week embark on roadshows in the Eastern Cape to engage stakeholders on strategies to strengthen Employment Equity implementation and compliance in the workplace.

The workshops will be held on 06 September at the East London International Convention Centre in Marine Park Complex, 22 Esplanade Beachfront - and on 07 September at the Pine Lodge Resort in Marine Drive, Summerstrand in Port Elizabeth.

Held under the theme: “Transformation - makes business sense” – the objectives of the stakeholder workshops is:

  • To publicise the department’s Code of Good Practice on Employment of Persons with Disabilities,
  • To gather public comment on the Draft Amended Code of Good Practice on the Preparation of EE Plans,
  • To publicise the 2016 EE Online Reporting,
  • To publicise the 16th Annual Report and the 2015 EE Public Register, and
  • To present current Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) cases on Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value.

The Department of Labour started the EE roadshows on 15 August 2016 in Mbombela (Nelspruit), Mpumalanga Province, with the aim to create awareness on compliance with the Employment Equity Act. It has since held EE workshops in Rustenburg in North West; Kimberley in Northern Cape; Polokwane in Limpopo; Bloemfontein in Free State; Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. More workshops will be held in the Western Cape, and rounding off at Birchwood in Boksburg, Gauteng on September 20.

The EE workshops are open to human resource executives and practitioners; assigned senior EE managers/transformation managers; EE Forum members; academics; trade unions and employees.

Employers (companies, government departments, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions etc.) are as per the EE Act obliged to submit annually to the Department of Labour their employment equity reports in regard to demographic profiles, gender representation and EE plans on how to address discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

The EE national roadshows presentations will be held from 09h00 to 14h00.

The EE Online and Manual reporting season opened on 01 September 2016. The manual reporting season closes on 3 October 2016, while online reporting season closes next January.
