The Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Mr Enver Surty will this morning, the 14th of July 2016, deliver the key note address at the Kha Ri Gude Graduation Ceremony in Durban.
Kha Ri Gude is an adult mass literacy campaign. Kha Ri Gude is a Tshivenḓa phrase which means, “let’s learn” - masifunde in Zulu. The most recent data indicates that 4, 2 million adult learners have completed the programme since its inception – they are now able to read, write and count.
The Kha Ri Gude Programme is the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) response to the call of the Freedom Charter which declared that, “The Doors of Learning and Culture Shall be Opened!” The Charter specifically called for the eradication of adult illiteracy. It proclaimed boldly that: “Adult illiteracy shall be ended by a mass state education plan.” Through this programme this proclamation has become a reality for many.
This graduation ceremony comes as the DBE begins to wind down the Kha Ri Gude programme which has been heralded as a huge success both at home and internationally.
Members of the media are invited to join the Deputy Minister as we celebrate these courageous men and women who did not let their age keep them from becoming literate.
