Premier Supra Mahumapelo conveys condolences to Lobelo family

Premier Supra Mahumapelo has expressed his profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the Lobelo family and people of Greater Taung Local Municipality, on the passing away of Mr Kaone Lobelo, former Executive Mayor of Greater Taung Local Municipality and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality respectively, who died last night on a car accident.

Lobelo was also the Chairperson of SALGA in North West for five years, from 2011 until October 2016.

According to police report, Lobelo lost control of the bakkie he was driving, which overturned on the road between Reivilo and Taung. The 58 year old Lobelo was reportedly trapped in the car and was certified dead on the scene by the emergency services personnel.

Conveying his sincere condolences, the deeply saddened Mahumapelo said, “We have learnt with great shock of this tragic incident. During this time of morning, our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the late Mr Kaone Lobelo, whose death is a great loss to not only the people of Greater Taung Local Municipality, but the entire province.

We wish to pay our tribute to this great man, a leader who has served the North West Province with diligence and distinction”.

At the time of his death, Lobelo was the Deputy Chairperson of the North West Provincial Geographical Names Committee, appointed by the MEC for Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs, the position he held for two terms, since 2009. He also served as the Chairperson of this committee for terms, between 2003 and 2009.

Expressing her deep shock at the untimely death of Mr Lobelo, MEC for Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs Mme Ontlametse Mochware said, “The tragic news on the passing on of one of our own, Mr Kaone Lobelo is saddening. Death has robbed us of a competent, passionate and dedicated leader of the provincial Geographical Names Committee. May his soul rest in peace”.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Reivilo police.
