Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to give an update on 2021 July events, 8 Jul

Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) will on Friday, 8 July 2022 give an update on the events of July 2021.

South Africa experienced violent civil unrest, mainly in parts of the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, between 8th and 17th July 2021. The unrest was characterised by social media mobilisation leading to looting, destruction of property and the disruption of economic activity.

On 5 August 2021, President of the Republic, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, announced the appointment of an Expert Panel to review South Africa’s response to the unrest. More directly, the Panel was required to review South Africa’s preparedness and shortcomings in responding to the unrest.

The media briefing will amongst other things provide progress on the implementation of the recommendations by the Expert Panel as well as criminal cases and economic impact on livelihoods, emanating from the failed insurrection.

Members of the media are invited to the media briefing as per the following details:
Date: Friday, 08 July 2022
