Select Committee on Trade and International Relations visit the dti on joint oversight mission
The Select Committees on Trade and International Relations, and Economic and Business Development today visited the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) on a joint-oversight visit to assess progress made on initiatives established and supported by the department as per its strategic objectives.
The oversight visit by the committees also served to test the authenticity of the information provided by the dti. It was also aimed at ensuring that investments supported benefitted the country in terms of beneficiation and localisation as has been defined in the 8th Iteration of the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP), that was tabled earlier this year.
Speaking at the meeting, the dti Chief Director responsible for Industrial Policy, Ms Zukiswa Ncapayi stressed that IPAP had proven itself as an important tool for strengthening intra-government integration and coordination.
“Successive annual iterations of IPAP have introduced new themes and focus areas to achieve a higher impact industrial policy throughout the years. The 2016 iteration introduces an export focus leveraging a devalued currency,” she said.
Ncapayi also highlighted that 35 projects representing investment to the value of R3,7 billion have already been supported by R979 million from the dti as part of the Automotive Incentive Scheme (AIS).
The Select Committees were also scheduled to visit the BMW plant in Rosslyn and the Rail Coaches Manufacturing Plant in Koedoespoort to gain first-hand knowledge of the programmes that were assisted by the dti.
