Dr. Botma's best known book, Die Buffel struikel, was translated as Buffalo Battalion.

“Louis Bothma can write” is the opinion of reviewers such as Koos Kombuis and Fransjohan Pretorius but he has also distinguished himself as a storyteller. Huilwater builds on a previous book with a similar approach, Losbaadjiesak (stories from long-gone days and far-away places) which was published in 2011. He tells childhood stories of his upbringing in the Boesmanland region of the Northern Cape, his years as student and lecturer in economics.

There are tales of his involvement with projects in Angola, such as Rondkyk toere (Viewing tours) through the Kalahari and Namibia, and about friends and interesting characters that crossed his path.

For rugby supporters there are stories of toe-curling pleasure. The legendary Frik du Preez pops up a few times, Jimmy Young gives the All Blacks a thrashing, Jan Tromp faces up to a leopard with his bare hands and Griquas win the Currie Cup. You can also read the story behind the try by Mannetjies Roux of which Laurika Rauch's uncle is still talking and run a politically laden marathon with the author through the streets of Bloemfontein.

Fans of Bothma's books about the Border War will love Oom Willie se pad (Uncle Willie's road) and Die Rooi Leeu en die terroriste (The Red Lion and the terrorists). Huilwater will be a lovely gift to anyone with a sense of humour.
