New system to improve sanitation in rural in Eastern Cape
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will launch an innovative toilet system near Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape, to improve sanitation in the water-scarce area. The event will take place on Saturday 12 November in the Jerseyville village.
Known as, the ‘low pour flush system’, the sanitation technology is an off-grid invention that uses only two litres of water for one flush; it is low maintenance and has been demonstrated in 125 households. The system also allows the use grey water to flush.
The event will also see the launch of the Corrective Action Requests Report System (CARRS), a water incident management and reporting system to improve the efficient management of water leaks.
The event will be attended by DST’s Director-General, Dr Phil Mjwara, CEO Water Research Commission, Dr Dhesigen Naidooand the Mayors of and Amahlathi District, Nomfusi Winnie Nxawe and Amahlathi Local municipality, Pateka Qaba.
