Minister Naledi Pandor unveils prototype hydrogen fuel cell forklift and refuelling station, 31 Mar

Hydrogen powered forklift, refuelling station to be unveiled

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, and Impala Platinum (Implats) will unveil a prototype hydrogen fuel cell forklift and refuelling station in Springs, in the East Rand, on Thursday, 31 March.

The partnership working on the prototype includes Impala Refining Services and the Hydrogen South Africa centre of competence for systems integration and technology validation (HySA Systems), hosted by the University of the Western Cape.

HySA Systems is one of three centres of competence established by the Department of Science and Technology under the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Research, Development, and Innovation Strategy, the objective of which is to use local resources to develop high-value commercial activities in hydrogen fuel cell technologies.  The ultimate goal of the HySA Strategy is to enable South Africa to supply 25% of global platinum group metal-based catalyst demand by 2020.

The Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura, Implats CEO Terence Goodlace, and the Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mondli Gungubele, will also attend the event.
