Government youth engagement programme for June 2016

President Jacob Zuma will lead the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the June 16 Uprising during National Youth Day, June 16, at at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Throughout the Youth Month of June, Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers are hosting youth engagement programmes throughout the country.

Below is the schedule of Ministers and Deputy Ministers Youth Month programme. Further details will be available from the respective departments.

Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Daff)

Synopsis: Farming in the digital age. This activity will introduce young people to the digital world associated with agriculture, forestry and fisheries. There will be exhibition stalls by suppliers of services and machinery that will demonstrate how technological innovations have improved the way things are done. DAFF will invite stakeholders who are in the ICT sphere to come and show case how ICT has improved the sector as an attempt to lure youth in the sector.

Synopsis: Youth in fisheries. This engagement will take the form of a Career Expo focusing on structured capacity and development support programmes that youth can access in the fisheries sector. There will be exhibitions whereby youth will be exposed to aquaculture farms and entrepreneurial opportunities in the sector.

30 June 2016

Synopsis: Association of Students in Agricultural Training Institutes (ASATI) Young Entrepreneurs Summit. This Summit will provide a platform where students, graduates, young farmers, industry role-players, government, and school going learners will share ideas on assisting graduates from Colleges of Agriculture to access farms and fully participate in the agriculture, forestry and Fisheries sectors. The platform will further allow for the establishment of new partnerships for sustainable and youth-driven agriculture and food production. Each College will have an exhibition stall where they will demonstrate Agri-innovation that is taking place in their respective institutions. It is proposed that the Honorable Minister will be accompanied by the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.

Synopsis: DAC Entities’ Youth Month Events. The Minister will attend Youth Dialogue/Interaction at DAC entities as they host Youth events, to mark the importance of the month in the calendar. The DAC has three major playhouses which will be used to host these events. The local Community Arts Centres will be used to recruit the young people in the arts to attend.

Venue: The events are planned for Durban (KZN), Mangaung (FS) and Cape Town (WC). Launch will be held at various DAC entities in the three provinces listed above.

Synopsis: The Launch of MANDELA GUN, the film. The Minister will open the Première of the film, MANDELA GUN, which has been supported through one of the entities of the DAC, the NFVF.  The Film looks at the gun that the former President Mandela has hidden during the Rivonia trial.

Synopsis: Recall Your History – Youth Month Event. The Minister will be co-hosting Intergenerational dialogue and Photographic Exhibition (on June 16, 1976), in collaboration with the Hector Pietersen Foundation. The dialogue will focus on life and times of Hector Pietersen, as well as those that may have influenced his life. The second part of the event is based on raising awareness of the day among the school children of today, through a photographic exhibition. The Deputy Minister will host the photographic exhibition programme with school children.

Synopsis: DAC Youth Month Dialogues. The Minister will be hosting several Intergenerational Dialogues between Older persons involved in the 1976 Uprisings and Young people. Suggest Social Cohesion Advocates and Social Cohesion Youth Advocates. The dialogues will include former Ministers and Struggle stalwarts, talking to young people.

City-based hubs are the core of the global shapers community. Each hub is required to undertake an impact-generating project to better their local community. Additionally, hubs organise workshops, meetings with leaders, and other activities that increase its members’ capacity for impact as current and future leaders. Synopsis: Business Accelerator Programme: Primedia will relaunch the Business Accelerator programme, in conjunction with Nedbank. The programme profiles businesses with growth potential that are creating new jobs. It has been running for years, prompted partly by Minister Gordhan challenging Primedia to do something about youth unemployment. Primedia has come up with yet another programme that aims to encourage business to increase the number of internships and learnerships they provide to the youth.

It has been proven that the more young people stay out of work, the more unemployable they become. In partnership with EOH, 702 would like to extend this internship programme to many other companies in other sectors. Together we hope to create tens of thousands of internship & learnership positions, which we believe will result in long term employment.

Synopsis: The Minister will be embarking on a public participation programme, where he will be accompanied by the dti agencies amongst others National Credit Regulator, CIPC, NCC, the local government and the dti Divisions. The aim of the programme is to engage with the youth formations and provide the platform to highlight the issues surround unemployment and skills development.

Synopsis: The Department of Transport is currently convening Provincial Road Safety Youth Summits in all nine provinces leading to the National Road Safety Youth Summit scheduled to take place on 17 June 2016. Young people are a high risk population group because they are inexperienced, overestimate their abilities, their behaviour patterns are strongly associated with expectations and social pressures that promote risk taking on the road, such as none use of seat belts, over-speeding and drinking and driving. It is for this reason that the Department is engaging and involving young people on road safety through these summits.

Venue: The preparations for the Provincial Youth Summits are on-going. Only Limpopo and North West Provinces have concluded their summits. The National Youth Summit will be held in Gauteng, at venue that is still to be confirmed.

The Department will facilitate an Inter–generational conversation between young women of today (2016) and women who participated in the 1976 uprising. The students will be mobilized from universities in Gauteng. The conversation will include discussion on the following:

Violence against women and children.

Challenges faced by women of 1976 and challenges faced by young women today.

Empowerment opportunities for young women.

Synopsis:  Statistics Youth Conference in collaboration with Statistics South Africa. A competition where papers are presented will culminate in young aspiring statisticians gathering at the conference to present their respective statistics papers. Those attending are selected from many who entered the competition.

24 June 2016, whole day programme

Synopsis: Youth imbizo focusing on infrastructure development, showcasing the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality development projects. This will serve to inspire the youth in the builds industry whilst simultaneously taking stock of the strides achieved through the King Sabata Dalindyebo Presidential Project.

Synopsis: There will be launch of the National Youth Development Agency branch to which will provide services to the youth in the district. There will also be a youth expo to mark the launch of the branch.
