Update: Government moves to support Lily Mine accident victims

Work has begun by Government Departments to assist families of miners who are still trapped at Lily Gold Mine in Barberton.

The affected families have received trauma debriefing and counseling services as well as referrals to SASSA for Social Relief of Distress and food parcels for three months.  Further services will be provided to the affected families and other workers from the mine, these include:

  • Family therapy with all the affected families
  • Family social circumstances assessment and necessary intervention
  • On site social relief of distress (including tents, blankets and mattresses and food,) assistance for families who are waiting for the trapped miners to be brought on surface
  • Community therapy targeting mines, traditional leadership, unions, municipality, schools and the employer

 The Chairpersons of Portfolio Committees on Mineral Resources, Mr Sahlulele Luzipo and Labour, Ms LumkaYengeni visited the mine today to ascertain the circumstances around the mine collapse and offer their support to the families.
