Deputy Minister Godfrey Oliphant facilitates workshop on integration of compensation system, 25 to 26 Jan

Government moves to integrate the compensation systems for occupational injuries and diseases in mines

Mineral Resources Deputy Minister, Mr Godfrey Oliphant, together with the Deputy Ministers of Health and Labour will on 25 to 26 January 2016 facilitate a workshop on the integration of a compensation system for occupational injuries and diseases in South Africa.

The workshop is a renewed focus on the integration of the various statutory systems which includes, amongst others, the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act, 1973 (ODMWA) and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, 1993 (COIDA).

It aim is to provide a unified and comprehensive compensation system for all workers in South Africa which is in line with Priority Nine of the National Development Plan which aims to provide a comprehensive, responsive and sustainable social protection system. In addition, the workshop will look at legacy issues relating to ex-Miners, these include compensation, medical care and rehabilitation.
