Government will host the National Women’s Day celebration on Sunday, 09 August 2020, to pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
The National Women’s Day virtual celebration will be held under the theme: “Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights for an Equal Future”.
The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, will deliver the keynote address.
The virtual celebration will be streamed on major news channels (national television and radio channels) as well as on government social media platforms. The programme will start at 12:00 midday.
