Government activities for 3 to 8 Apr

Government has scheduled the following briefings/activities for the week of 3 – 8 April 2018. The activities, which are aligned to the National Development Plan and outlined in the Medium Term Strategic Framework 2014-2019, are undertaken to build a better South Africa.

  • From 1 to 30 April, Freedom Month is observed throughout South Africa to celebrate the dawn of freedom and democracy and the achievements of all South Africans in moving away from hatred, divisions and a painful history to build a common future together.  The month will be celebrated under the theme: “The Year of Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela: United for a Radical Socio-economic Transformation”.
  • This week, the Ministers of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Social Security will visit some of SASSA’s social grants pay points. The purpose of these visits to the pay points are to personally assess the overall state of readiness of the system and to ensure a smooth social grants payment process. On Tuesday, 03 April, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Susan Shabangu, will be in Gauteng Province at Vaal and Sebokeng. While the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Dr Siyabonga Cwele, will be in KwaZulu-Natal Province at Port Shepstone Post Office, Gamalakhe, Mthengwane and Ntaza.  
  • The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will meet her Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu on the side-lines of the VII Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS). The conference will be held in Moscow from 3-5 April 2018. The two ministers will discuss a variety of bilateral defence issues.
  • On Friday, 06 April, marks the 39th anniversary of the execution of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu. President, Cyril Ramaphosa, together with Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv Michael Masutha, Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, Gauteng Premier, David Makhura as well as the Mahlangu family will visit the Gallows to observe a re-enactment of Solomon Mahlangu’s final moments before his execution. The re-enactment will take place at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, Pretoria. Before he was executed, Solomon Mahlangu is reported to have said: “My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom. Tell my people that I love them. They must continue the fight.”
