Deputy Minister Bheki Cele engages drought stricken farmers in KwaZulu-Natal, 11 Apr

The Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele to engage drought stricken sugarcane farmers in Kwa-Mthethwa

The Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele (MP) and MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development in KwaZulu-Natal Province, Mr Cyril Xaba (MPL) will engage with drought-stricken sugarcane farmers and Small-scale Sugarcane Growers’ Association in the Umfolozi Local Municipality as part of the government imbizo programme.

The drought has severely affected the livelihoods of sugarcane growers in the area. Furthermore, farmers suffered significant decline of harvest since 2014 to date and most of them rely on sugarcane production as a way of earning a living.

The Deputy Minister and the provincial leadership are going to bring interventions, discuss service delivery issues and address challenges faced by the small-scale sugarcane growers as part of the government’s on-going National Imbizo Focus Week, under the theme “Together we move South Africa forward”.

Members of the media are hereby invited to attend the imbizo.
