Gender Equality convenes consultative meeting on Women’s participation and representation in Political Parties in Local Government, 27 Jun

Invitation to a Consultative Meeting on Women’s Participation and Representation in Political Parties in Local Government

On the 27 June 2016, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will convene a “Consultative Dialogue on Women’s Participation and Representation in Political Parties in Local Government”. This is in preparation for the country’s 2016 Local Government Elections to be hold on the 3rd August 2016.  The CGE is invited the following parties: COPE, UDM, NFP, ANC, PAC, ACDP, APC, FF+, EFF, DA and IEC.

The Dialogue will entail two presentations based on the findings of two reports compiled by the CGE on women’s participation and representation in political parties in South Africa. The findings are based on a gendered analysis of the outcomes of the 2014 elections, as well as an assessment of the efforts of political parties in promoting gender equality and transformation within their internal processes, practices and structures.

Through this Dialogue the Commission seeks not only to highlight the importance of gender equality as the country prepares for the 2016 Local Government Elections, but also to learn from the experiences, successes and challenges faced by political parties in promoting gender equality within their structures.

The CGE hopes that this multiparty Consultative Dialogue will serve as an opportunity to engage with the various political parties on the issues arising out of its findings, and to agree on mutually supportive approaches toward promoting greater women’s participation and representation at local government level.
