Gauteng Legislature convenes annual Sector Parliament for youth, 10 Jun

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will on Friday, 10 June 2016 convene the 2016 Youth Sector Parliament under the theme ‘Partnering with our youth for improved local governance: the years past and the years ahead. The annual Sector Parliament is a public participation platform that creates awareness about the work of GPL among the youth.

The young people of Gauteng are encouraged to take part in legislative processes and engage on policy matters affecting them. It is important that the youth raise their views on improving service delivery, measure the effectiveness of existing Youth Development policies and programmes for a better Gauteng.

The 2016 Youth Sector Parliament is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 10 June 2016
Time: 10h00
Venue: Nasrec Exhibition Centre, City of Johannesburg.

This Sector Parliament coincides with the 40th anniversary of 16 June 1976 march and forms part of provincial initiatives that are being implemented throughout the month of June in commemoration of the anniversary. The Sector Parliament will precede the National Youth Dialogue GPL has been selected to host later on in the month.

In May 2016, preparatory workshops were conducted in Tshwane, Sedibeng, West Rand, City of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni - targeting youth from all Gauteng regions. Discussions for this year’s Sector Parliament will focus on current burning issues in the country: Social cohesion; role of youth in the Nthirisano programme; and Violent protests and burning of public infrastructures.

To ensure meaningful participation, GPL has invited Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPLs); Gauteng Members of the Executive (Social Transformation Cluster); all Political wings of Youth Formations in Gauteng; Municipalities: Councillors and Ward committees; Youth Groups; Youth Business formations; Young Women’s Groups; Institutions of Higher Learning; South African Disability Alliance; Municipal Youth Desks; Religious Groups; South African Youth Council; NYDA and NFSA.

GPL is mandated by the Constitution of South Africa to promote public participation, improve access and involvement of the people of Gauteng in the daily running of the Province. GPL represents the voice of the people of Gauteng, as well as ensuring that oversight is conducted and laws are implemented and abided to.
