Gauteng Legislature convenes public hearing on service delivery issues in Ekurhuleni, 4 to 5 Aug

Gauteng Legislature’s Standing Committee on petitions convenes public hearing to facilitate engagements on service delivery issues in Ekurhuleni

Led by the Chairperson, Honourable Refilwe Mogale, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Standing Committee on Petitions will convene its quarterly public hearing over two days. The hearing is aimed at resolving service delivery concerns raised by the people of Duduza and surrounding areas through petitions. These concerns often come to the Legislature as submissions, petitions or requests addressed to the Petitions Standing Committee by individuals or representatives of communities.

The people of Gauteng have a constitutional right to petition on issues related to the work of the Gauteng Provincial Government and Gauteng municipalities, and are thus entitled to a platform to raise their concerns and have them addressed by relevant structures. The right to petition is given and protected in sections 17, 115, 118, and 195 of the country’s Constitution, and the Gauteng Petitions Act (no. 5 of 2002). It is against this background that the Standing Committee is convening this external hearing, wherein the petitioners will have an opportunity to directly engage with the relevant authorities and receive feedback pertaining to their petitions.

A total of nineteen (19) petitions will be focused on over the two days, which fall within Gauteng Department of Education; Ekurhuleni Municipality; and Gauteng Department of Human Settlements. The grievances include: poor working conditions for auxiliary workers; mismanagement of Tholopele School; building of school in Mayfield; lack of service delivery; incorrect billing; misappropriation of funds; mismanagement of premises; illegal occupation of land; RDP houses allocations; and issuing of title deeds.

The 2-day Petitions Public Hearing is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date: Friday 4th – Saturday 5th August 2017
Starting Time: 09h00
Venue: Monty Motloung Community Hall, Duduza

Citizens of Duduza and surrounding areas have been invited to form part of one of the most effective and peaceful means of resolving community concerns, grievances and requests without resorting to violent demonstrations. Community members are also encouraged to submit petitions/grievances/complaints in writing on the day of the petitions hearing as there will be a table setup outside for this purpose.

Members of the media are also invited to attend and urged to confirm attendance.
