Gauteng Legislature’s Standing Committee on Petitions hosts public meeting to provide feedback on sewerage system petition

Led by the Chairperson, Honourable Refilwe Mogale, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Standing Committee on Petitions will tomorrow (Saturday, 22nd July) convene a public meeting with the people of Katlehong. The purpose of the meeting is to provide feedback to petitioners on the blocked sewer system petition as well as educate the community on methods of avoiding blockage to the system.

The Petition was received in February 2016 about the constant blockages of sewerages in and around Greenfields, Katlehong. The Standing Committee intervened and the matter was resolved, and the Petition closed. However, the Committee later discovered during a site visit with the City of Ekurhuleni that the constant blockages were because of the community throwing foreign objects inside the sewerages and by default causing the blockages. This means that the blockages will constantly occur unless the community is sensitised and educated about the consequences of their actions.

Further to that, there is a camp just next to the township which houses livestock. There is no river or stream next to this camp which means there is no measures to hydrate the livestock and graze the grass. As a result, the farmers have to resort to water which comes from the blocked sewerages to hydrate and graze the grass. The Petition Rapporteur Member Thuliswa Nkabinde, resolved to convene a public meeting in order to sensitise and educate the community about the consequences of their actions. The Public Meeting is targeted at 150 stakeholders who are residents of Greenfields.

The public meeting is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date: Saturday, 22nd July 2017
Time: 10h00
Venue: Greenfields Community Hall, 193 Sausage Street, Greenfields, Ekurhuleni

Members of the media are also invited to attend the session.
