Gauteng Legislature’s Standing Committee on Petitions convenes public hearing on service delivery issues in Soshanguve.
Led by its Honourable Chairperson; Refilwe Mogale, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Standing Committee on Petitions will convene a two day external hearing aimed at resolving service delivery challenges raised by various communities in the City of Tshwane region through petitions. These are concerns referred to the Legislature as petitions or requests addressed to the Petitions Standing Committee by individuals or representatives of communities, requesting for intervention.
Communities in Gauteng have the right to petition Gauteng Provincial Government and Gauteng municipalities, and are thus entitled to a platform to raise their concerns as well as satisfactory resolve of their grievances. The right to petition is given and protected in sections 17, 115, 118, and 195 of the country’s Constitution, and the Gauteng Petitions Act (5 of 2002). It is against this background that the Gauteng Provincial Legislature is hosting these petitions hearing in delivering on its mandates; affording petitioners an opportunity to directly engage with the relevant Departments on their service delivery challenges with the aim of resolving them.
The petitions external hearing will be convened as follows:
Day 1
Date: Friday, 27 May 2016
Time: 16h00 to 18h00
Venue: Soshanguve Block H: Halala Community Hall
Day 2
Date: Saturday, 28 May 2016
Time: 09h00 to 17h30
Venue: Soshanguve Block H: Halala Community Hall
The Portfolio Committee has invited stakeholders in Soshanguve and surrounding areas to participate in one of the most effective and peaceful means of resolving community concerns, grievances and requests without resorting to violent demonstrations. Community members are also encouraged to submit petitions/grievances/complaints in writing on the days of the petitions hearing. The initiative is part of the Portfolio Committee’s implementation of its oversight and public participation mandates; and also contributes to GPL’s efforts of ‘Taking the Legislature to the people’.
Members of the media are invited to attend these sessions.
