Gauteng commemorates Women’s Day in Pretoria, 9 Aug

Gauteng gears up to celebrate Women’s Day

The commemoration of Women’s Month in August serves as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest of pass laws.

This year’s Women’s Day will be commemorated under the theme: “Year of Oliver Tambo: Women United in Moving Gauteng City Region Forward”.

Gauteng celebrations will include a 2.2km march led by Premier David Makhura, and the leadership of various women’s organization aimed at reliving the 1956 women’s march. The march will commence at Pretoria/Bosman Station and end at the Women’s Living Heritage Monument a Lillian Ngoyi Square, Tshwane, where Premier Makhura will deliver an address.

“Today women across South Africa are faced with different challenges such as gender-based violence, inequality, unemployment, poverty and women empowerment.

“Although the challenges facing women today differ from those faced by the 1956 generation, they require the same impetus as that which was demonstrated by the 1956 generation to eradicate” said MEC Faith Mazibuko.

Gauteng Provincial Government has over the years implemented various programmes aimed at empowering and developing women in the province, which include the Transformation, Modernisation and Reindustrialisation programme.

“Although noticeable gains have been made in addressing the plight of women in province, a lot still needs to be done in bridging the inequality gap between men and women and in ensuring that women become active agents of the economy,” added MEC Mazibuko.
