The Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts Culture and Recreation Ms Molebatsi Bopape has learnt with deep sadness of the passing of Mme Ruth Mompati.
Mme Mompati was renowned for her long and distinguished social and political activism including being among the leaders of the 1956 Women’s March along with Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph and others.
“She is one of the mothers of the Freedom Movement who all her life remained selfless and committed towards social justice for all. We owe it to people like her, who along with other women, didn’t just accept to sit idly at home with children -as society would have expected, but took it upon themselves to challenge and fight for civil rights and justice,” says MEC Bopape.
Mompati moves on to another life to join an endless-list of women stalwarts including the likes of Albertina Sisulu, Adelaide Tambo, Ruth First, Charlotte Maxeke, Bertha Gxowa, Helen Joseph and many others who have passed on from this earth.
“As we move forward towards addressing the socio economic challenges plaguing the country, we should always remember her and many of those who went before her for their contribution towards bringing about dignity to the majority of South Africans”.
“To the family and loved ones we’d like to express our deepest condolences over your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and may Mme Mompati’s soul rest in peace” concludes MEC Bopape.
