MEC Mathabo Leeto congratulates Free State Sport Science Institute athletes

Free State Sport Science Institute athletes fly South Africa’s flag

The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mrs. N.S. Leeto would like to take this opportunity to congratulate two athletes from the Free State Sport Science Institute (FSSSI) for representing our country, in particular the Free State Province, at an international level. MEC Leeto is immensely proud of all the athletes who continue to represent the Free State province well across all sport codes.

MEC Leeto congratulates Damean Oosthuizen (FSSSI Elite Cyclist), a 16-year-old Cyclist from the Free State Province, has been selected by Cycling South Africa to represent the National Squad at the UCI Road World Championships in Doha, Qatar from 8 – 16 October 2016. Damean is part of the FSSSI Elite Athlete and Coaches Support Programme of the FSSSI.

MEC Leeto also wishes to congratulate Karla Mostert (FSSSI Elite Netball Player) from the Free State Province has confirmed that she has accepted the offer from Sunshine Coast Lightning to play in the Australian National League in 2017. She will be the first South African to play her Netball as a professional player for the top Netball Country in the World.

Karla has represented the National Protea Team in 53 Tests and was part of the Free State Crinums Team that has won the Brutal Fruit National Premier Netball League in 2016 for three consecutive years and is also part of the FSSSI Elite Athlete & Coaches Support Programme of the FSSSI.

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has supported both these athletes through the FSSSI with Sport Science Support, which include conditioning, testing, nutrition and coaching support amongst others.

“Sport is a key instrument we can use not only to promote a healthy lifestyle but moreover, we can use sport to promote social cohesion within our society. These two athletes remind us, as a province; of the potential we have to compete among the best in the world in the arena of sport hence they are shining on our behalf at an international level” said MEC Leeto.
