Four schools to represent the province during the National Baswa Le Meetse Competition.
Talent sparked over the weekend in Worcester as the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) staged the Baswa Le Meetse (Youth in Water) Provincial competition. This year, 31 schools participated in this competition under the theme: “Washing of hands, use and care of sanitation facilities for a healthy lifestyle, and Water Conservation”. The competition is aimed at recognising the role of learners in water awareness campaigns.
The competition is attracting more schools and the level of competition has improved. The Baswa le Meetse Awards (Youth in Water) are aimed at recognizing the role of learners in awareness campaigns related to water and sanitation. This competition promotes health and hygiene, stimulates the interest of youth in water related careers, and promotes cultural diversity.
The competition is targeted at grades six learners, who convey health and hygiene messages through the arts medium, i.e. drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters under the identified theme.
The five winning schools who took position one per category are:
- Drama: Injongo Primary School from Khayelitsha.
- Music: Injongo Primary School from Khayelitsha.
- Poetry: Nkqubela Primary School from Robertson.
- Praise Singing: Eluxolweni Primary School in Khayelitsha
- Poster: Wellington Primary School from Wellington.
These schools will be representing the Western Cape Province in the national leg to be held during Youth Month. During the national competition, provinces will be competing for prizes such as media classrooms that consist of computers, as well as cash prize, trophies and certificates.
