Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries hosts Aquaculture Finance and Investment Seminar, 27 Mar

DAFF to host its first Aquaculture Finance and Investment Seminar

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will host its inaugural Aquaculture Finance and Investment Seminar on Wednesday, 27 March in Durban. The seminar is an information sharing platform that aims to bring together existing and prospective fish farmers; investment facilitation agencies; Development Funding Institutions (DFI’s) and private investors in an effort to stimulate investment into the aquaculture sector.

The aquaculture sector was prioritised through the Operation Phakisa: Oceans Economy programme launched in 2014 where it was concluded that South Africa’s aquaculture sector has a high growth potential due to an increasing demand of fish products due to the increasing global population. Moreover the capture fisheries yield has been plateauing over the past decade while aquaculture continues to grow over 7% per annum.

The programme is arranged into four thematic panel sessions namely ‘creating a conducive investment environment’; ‘investment facilitation’, ‘freshwater and marine aquaculture case studies on sourcing funding’ and presentations by industry experts and various DFI’s. The aquaculture sector is in its infancy and numerous organisations operating in the sector seek funding. It is therefore important that DAFF create platforms such as this seminar to enhance and sustain the industry.
