Escape at Witbank Correctional Centre

The Department of Correctional Services is conducting a preliminary investigation of a breakout at Witbank Correctional Centre in Witbank. The escape of two long term serving offenders occurred when they escaped through the perimeter fence main gate after physically wrestling with a female official to gain access out of the Centre and drove off with another official’s car. The car was found abandoned at the back gate of the Centre near agricultural field after it went into a ditch with the key still in the ignition and a cell phone which they left behind.

The appointed investigation team is continuing with preliminary investigation and a preliminary report will include actions already taken to prevent the reoccurrence of similar incidents, as well as, where applicable, steps taken against Correctional officials if found to be involved.

The escape was reported to SAPS to assist DCS to find escapees.

The names of the two long serving offenders who escaped from lawful custody are:

  • Mduduzi Johnson Khubheka – Attempted Murder/ Aggravating Robbery
  • Vusimuzi Geraald Skosana – Theft

The public is advised to report any suspicion or information regarding the escapees to the police and not take the law into their own hands.
