A 29 year-old cop from the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has yesterday appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court to face extortion and common robbery charges after he allegedly took money from two Chinese men.
Mthunzi Mdlalose, an OR Tambo International Airport-based officer, was arrested on Friday by the South African Police Service’s detective task team. Mdlalose is alleged to have, while on duty at the airport, initially stopped the complainants for failing to stop at a traffic sign within the airports’ vicinity, but ended up extorting US$120, 00 (about R1,735,00) from the complainants. The complainants opened a case against the suspect whom they later identified.
The crime is alleged to have been committed on Thursday.
The case has been postponed to 09 June 2016 for further investigations. The accused has been granted R2 000 bail and has been warned to appear before the same court.
