Eastern Cape Legislature women parliamentarians attend 60th UN Commission, 14 to 24 Mar

Three Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) joined millions to attend the 60th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York this week. The CSW is the principal global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women.

Women parliamentarians in the Province will represent the Legislature to add their voices in creating an equal and inclusive society for women and children under the theme “Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development”. The Deputy Speaker, Ms Bulelwa Tunyiswa, will lead the delegation and will be joined by the Women’s Caucus Chairperson, Ms Deborah Komose,   Ms Veliswa Mvenya and the Senior Manager in the office of the Deputy Speaker, Ms Nontobeko Mafu to provide administrative support.

The 60th session of the Commission takes place from 14-24 March 2016 to review progress made by various member countries in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years after its adoption in 1995. Opportunities for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in the post 2016 development agenda will also be addressed.
