The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature (ECPL) is hosting a two-day Public Participation & Petitions Indaba (PPP Indaba) from 8 to 9 June 2016 at Fish River Sun hotel. The Indaba themed “Demonstrating Good Governance through Public Participation & Petitions Management”, is aimed at sharing insights and best practises for improved public involvement in the local sphere.
It also seeks to clarity and guide the process of common and uniform approach in dealing with petitions and public participation in the province. The main objectives of the Indaba are as follows:
- To develop a provincial petitions framework with the aim of harmonizing the petition system in the province.
- To share experiences and challenges emanating from the participation of Traditional Leaders in Municipal Councils.
- To share the understanding of Public Participation and Petitions process with all spheres of government.
- To develop a common approach in dealing with Public Participation with other spheres of government.
- To ensure that there is no clash of roles between Mayors’ and Speakers’ offices with respect to management of petitions and conduct of public participation.
The Indaba will be attended by Presiding Officers of the ECPL, Chairpersons of all Legislature Portfolio Committees, Public Participation and Petitions Portfolio Committee, Office of the Premier, NCOP Delegates, Municipal Mayors and Speakers, Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs, SALGA, House of Traditional Leaders, State Institutions Supporting Democracy and Institutions of Higher Learning amongst others.
