The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature (ECPL) as a Commonwealth Women Parliamentarian (CWP) Sub-National Branch in partnership with the OR Tambo District Municipality will host Gender Advocacy Sessions in the district. The two-day programme will commence on Tuesday, 28 June 2016, with a Gender Advocacy Dialogue. A Gender Advocacy Workshop is also scheduled for Wednesday, 29 June 2016 and both sessions will take place at the OR Tambo Municipality Hall, Southernwood in Mthatha at 9h00.
The CWP are members of the Commonwealth Parliamentarian Association (CPA), founded by women delegates at the 1898 CPA Plenary Conference. It was formally recognised in the CPA Constitution in 2004. The CWP Africa Region is a branch of CWP International and constitutes of 19 National Branches from African countries including 36 Sub-National Branches from Nigeria and 9 Sub-National Branches and the ECPL being one of the Sub-National Branches.
The objectives of the Gender Advocacy Sessions are:
- To sensitise the leadership of the latest developments that may have direct impact on women.
- To keep ordinary women abreast of the amended pieces of legislations affecting them.
- To assert women and empower them to take conscious and radical decisions about their health.
- To encourage women to meaningfully participate in the Local Government Elections.
Approximately 150 people are expected to attend on day one with 250 people expected on the second day. The target audience includes Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs), the Premier of the Province, Members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), CWP MPLs from all Legislatures, Councillors from District and Local Municipalities, Women in Ministry, Imbumba Yamakhosikazi Akomkhulu (IYA), Icamagu Institute, Women Cooperatives, Young Women’s Network and Civil Servants. The House Chairperson in the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, is also expected to attend as an invited guest.
