Eastern Cape Legislature embarks on the EC Official Languages Bill, 30 to 31 Aug

The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts & Culture is embarking on Public Hearings across the Province to engage communities & relevant stakeholders on the Eastern Cape Use of Official Languages Bill, 2015. The Bill seeks to give effect to the Constitutional imperatives that provide that provincial government must regulate and monitor the use of official languages by legislative and other means.  

Objects of the Bill are:

• To provide for the establishment and functions of a Provincial Language Unit
• To provide for the establishment & functions of language units by provincial departments, provincial public entities and provincial government business enterprises and
• To require their adoption of a language policy.

The Committee will visit the following areas:

Members of the public are urged to comment on the Bill as it will affect them once it is passed into law. Copies of the Bill may be obtained at www.ecleg.gov.za or from Mr N. Verbal or written comments on the Bill may be submitted to Members of the Portfolio Committee who will be visiting various areas in the province to conduct public hearings.
