DSACR congratulates Retshidisitswe Mlenga & Tshenolo Lemao

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Retshidisitswe Mlenga and Tshenolo Lemao for winning gold and silver medals respectively in the 200m race at the IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. These Free State-born athletes are a testament that our province is the cradle of sport talent and a home of champions.

Lemao and Mlenga, who earned gold and silver in the 100m final earlier in the week, had no trouble in the opening round of the half-lap dash. The Department has also made strides through the Free State Sport Science Institute to ensure that we identify, nurture, and develop sport talent throughout the province. The institute provides sport science; conditioning and rehabilitation services to elite sport athletes and clubs in the Free State. We continue to support these athletes who represent our province and nation very well at world stages.”

The Department strongly believes that there’s a serious necessity for more youths to be actively involved in sport, in particular school sport. Undoubtedly, both Lemao and Mlenga are a shining example of what sport can do to enhance social cohesion and combat delinquent practices such as crime in our communities and schools. Sport, Recreation and Education are important vehicles for building a transformed, non-racial, non-sexist society, united in its diversity. These are also essential in the promotion of national reconciliation, social cohesion and national identity.
