Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete hands over media classroom to Amstelhof Primary School in Paarl

The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Mrs. Pamela Tshwete handed over a Media Classroom to Amstelhof Primary School in Paarl today through the 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme (VFWSEP).

The Amstelhof Primary School represented the Western Cape during the Baswa le Meetse Youth Water and Sanitation Summit held in June 2015 under the Poster category and won the media classroom sponsored by MTN-SA.

The media classroom package consists of 21 computers that are loaded with education software, interactive white board, data-bundles for a 24 months contract, desks and chairs.

Addressing the community, the Deputy Minister encouraged the public to protect the school. “I do not want to see people burning the school or closing gates because they are not happy with service delivery”, says Tshwete.

The 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme (VFWSEP) was initiated in 1996 and is implemented in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education to increase awareness of the general public through learners about integrated water resources management, to impart knowledge on water management skills, to enable communities to protect natural resources; to address issues of water supply and sanitation, health and hygiene, to stimulate the interest of youth in water and to encourage learners to pursue careers in water resources management as well as environmental management.

The competition also responds to the scarce skills challenge within the water sector.

The Baswa le Meetse Awards (Youth in Water) are aimed at recognising the role of learners in awareness campaigns related to water. This competition promotes health and hygiene, stimulates the interest of youth in water related careers, and promotes cultural diversity.

The competition is targeted at grade six learners, who convey health and hygiene messages through the arts medium, i.e. drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters under the theme „Washing of hands, use and care of sanitation facilities for a healthy lifestyle”
