Deputy Minister Makwetla to hand over revamped Drop-In Centre and donates wheelchairs on International Nelson Mandela Day
Every year, on 18 July, South Africans, together with the global community, honour our late former president and international icon Nelson Mandela in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day.
To this end, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr. Thabang Makwetla, will visit Siyonqoba Drop-In Centre in Breyten (near Ermelo), Mpumalanga, on Tuesday, 18 July 2017.
Deputy Minister Makwetla, in partnership with the Mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Cllr Solomon Nkosi, as well as the Msukaligwa Parliamentary Constituency Office, will be joined by offenders, Correctional Services officials and other key stakeholders, as they dedicate 67 minutes of their time to honour the ethos of the late former President Mandela.
The Deputy Minister will hand over a refurbished centre that has been tiled and installed with a new kitchen facility, computers and television set. Other refurbishments include renovation of roofs, door and window repairs, painting, cleaning of premises as well as improvements to the ablution facilities and palisade fencing.
Twenty five wheelchairs will also be donated to the elderly and people with disabilities.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation declared that this year the campaign would focus on fighting poverty under the theme: #ActionAgainstPoverty. Poverty impacts the entire country and is the root cause of malnutrition, poor education, disease, skills deficit, unemployment, loss of dignity and even anger and violence.
