Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla launches offender art gallery

Justice and Correctional Services Deputy Minister, Thabang Makwetla, says offenders in Correctional Centres have produced thousands of outstanding work of art which remain locked in stores across the country, and the introduction of art galleries will open the doors to many young people and the public.

Deputy Minister Makwetla officially launched an art gallery at the Klerksdorp Museum built from the old-closed prison premises as a partnership with the North West Department of Arts and Culture as well as the Matlosana Local Municipality, on 21 June 2016.

He said the creative industry is growing and contributing billions of rands to the country’s wealth and is being used as an integral part of rehabilitating offenders and giving them hope of a better future. The gallery with exquisite paintings by offenders is expected to boost tourism in the city and begin to boost local economy when the Department of Correctional Services completes its policy aimed at selling offenders arts to the public and tourists. Deputy Minister Makwetla said the envisaged policy will split revenue generated between communities that are victims of crime, the offender and the department for buying new input stocks. He said the art galleries will be established in 37 management areas across the country:
