Deputy Minister of Labour, Inkosi Phathekile Holomisa to launch training programmes for unemployed in the Western Cape
The Deputy Minister of Labour, iNkosi Phathekile Holomisa, will, on Friday 3 May 2019 launch training programmes worth an estimated R120 million aimed at creating jobs and up-skilling the unemployed in the Western Cape.
The training programmes follows the signing of partnership agreements between the Department of Labour’s Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the following institutions: False Bay TVET College, Northlink TVET College, National Student Financial Aid Scheme, Western Cape Community Education and Training College and the Boland TVET College. Through the partnerships, more than 995 learners will undergo training in various skills disciplines, including Building and Civil Construction, Office Administration, Wholesale and Retail Operations, Help Desk and Merchandising, Accounting Technician, Welders, Panel Beaters, Plumbing, and Hospitality.
The majority of learners are youth and UIF beneficiaries, particularly from the Cape Metro. The UIF will fund the training programmes through its Labour Activation Programmes (LAP) unit, which focuses on mitigating the negative effects of retrenchments, enhancing employability, enabling entrepreneurship and job preservation.
