Deputy Minister Jeffery calls for input into the NAP
Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development John Jeffery urged members of the public to participate in the development of the National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerances (NAP) in order for it to be inclusive and meaningful. The Deputy Minister was addressing the KwaZulu-Natal provincial consultation session on the NAP, held at the Royal Hotel in Durban on Tuesday 07 June 2016.
The consultation session is one of nine provincial consultation sessions on the draft NAP that the Department, together with various partners, has embarked on.
“The NAP needs to work. We cannot be facing the same levels of racial intolerance 20 years from now. That is why the provincial consultations, and the overall consultation process, are so important. The NAP can provide the basis for the development of a comprehensive public policy for the promotion of racial equality,” said Jeffery.
Deputy Minister Jeffery said that although the State plays a key role in the initiation, launching and implementation of the NAP, the plan needs to be owned by the entire population in order for it to make a real difference.
Stakeholders such as the Legal Aid South Africa, South African Human Rights Commission, the Gay and Lesbian Association and the Commission for Gender Equality participated and made inputs on the draft NAP.
The Deputy Minister also reminded participants to make inputs by 30 June 2016. The provincial consultations are to continue throughout the month of June.
