The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries General Bheki Cele joined by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr Senzo Mchunu and the KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Cyril Xaba cordially invite members of the media to the Fisheries Imbizo that will be held at Esikhawini J2 Sports field, Richards Bay on Thursday, 10 December 2015.
The Deputy Minister, Premier and the MEC will be engaging with Small Scale Fishers and community members in the province to identify and resolve challenges they experience in participating in the small scale fishing sector. The political leadership will also participate in compliance activities aimed at addressing illegal fishing in the area of Mpembeni (Mhlathuzi River Mouth).
Up to date the department has issued 1637 annual permits to 24 fishing communities along the coastline of Kwa Zulu-Natal for the 2015 fishing season. The number has been increasing annually for the past 10 years due to demand for access to marine resources.
