Deputy Minister Ayanda Dlodlo addresses Civil Society Workshop, 22 Mar

Deputy Minister Dlodlo to deliver keynote address at a Civil Society Workshop on the Open Government Partnership

On 22 March 2016, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) active in the Open Government Partnership (OGP) will host a discussion on the OGP and Agenda 2063, and the linkages to the implementation of Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Hosted by the Southern African Liaison Office (SALO) and the National Alliance for the Development of Community Advice Offices (NADCAO), the event will bring civil society actors from the African region as well as representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Statistics South Africa (STATSSA) to participate in the development of an outcomes process that will guide a commitment from civil society to the successful implementation of Goal 16 of the SDGs.

Civil Society Organisations that will participate in the workshop include the Open Democracy Advice Centre (ODAC), Africa CSO Working Group, Southern Africa Trust (SAT), Saferworld, Together2030 amongst other active parties.

The workshop aims to enhance the role of CSOs in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at national, regional and international levels. It will also identify opportunities for CSOs to leverage on the Open Government Partnership (OGP), as well as strengthen the legitimacy of SDG 16 implementation by ensuring a close alignment with Agenda 2063 and national action plans.

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is an international voluntary effort to improve government performance that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. It achieves this by bringing together governments and civil society organisations as true partners in the process.

Deputy Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ms Ayanda Dlodlo, as South Africa’s Special Envoy to the Open Government Partnership will deliver a keynote address on opportunities to strengthen the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals though the Open Government Partnership and African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

The Civil Society Workshop will take place from 08h30 ending 17h00 on Tuesday, 22 March 2016.
