Deputy Minister Bapela to deliver a keynote address at the Commemoration Of King Mampuru II

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) , Mr Obed Bapela deliver a keynote address at the commemoration of the late King Mampuru II on behalf of the Minister of CoGTA.

Since its inception in 1999, the annual Kgoshi Mampuru II Commemoration, has been well attended annually and continued to showcase the heritage and cultures of the people. The Deputy Minister will join the multitudes of attendees at this year's celebration comprising of traditional leaders, government leaders across the three spheres, communities and contingents of guests from far and near.

The late Kgosi Mampuru is amongst the first liberation icons of South Africa who did not recognise the oppressive hut tax law imposed in the 1860s on African households by the Colonial Government. His refusal to identify with a repressive and discriminatory regime went a long way towards the achievement of the freedom and democracy we enjoy today.

The annual commemoration of Kgosi Mampuru II is important as it honours his examplary life, gallantry and the bold stance he adopted against colonial domination. For his tough stance against the oppressive regime and refusing to pay an imposed hut tax, he was brutally executed in public at the old Pretoria Central Prison on 22 November 1883. In honour of the late Kgosi Mampuru II, the old Pretoria Central Prison was named after him on 10 April 2013.
